What is the MOST Effective Marketing Strategy of ALL Time?

Let me ask you a question…

What is one of the most effective marketing strategies in the world?  Do you know?  Is it social media marketing, SEO, direct marketing, internet marketing?  I could go on listing all of the different marketing strategies that are extremely effective to help your business make more money.  But none of the above strategies are as effective as the OLDEST strategy in the world.

What is it you ask?

It’s word of mouth marketing my friend.

I mean, think about it.  Word of mouth marketing has been around since the beginning of the world.  I can bet you that in the prehistoric times, when the cavemen ruled the world, word of mouth marketing existed and worked extremely well for everyone.  If one caveman made a really good club that didn’t break, worked well and was easy to use, his cavemen buddies probably told their cavemen buddies about the club when their club broke into pieces trying to beat each other over the head. Talk about word of mouth marketing in prehistoric times 🙂

You get the point, right?  Word of mouth marketing is extremely powerful because you have other people, besides you, telling their friends about your services or your products.  You are no longer the one who keeps telling people: Buy my stuff!  You have your past customers, clients or anyone else for that matter, tell the world about how great your product or your service really is.  That my friend is POWER! That my friend is word of mouth marketing at it’s finest. 

But how do you achieve that word of mouth?  How do you get it going?  First of all, your service or your product can’t suck.  If it sucks, it won’t stick.  Are we in agreement?  Cool.  Everybody knows that if a product or a service sucks, they won’t recommend it to their friends.  In fact, it can have to total, 180 degree negative effect on your business.  How?

Let me ask you a question?  Have you ever had a bad experience with a product or a service and you were so mad that you told everyone you knew about how bad that experience was?  I remember reading about a Cable repair man who fell asleep on the sofa in customer’s home while waiting on the reply from the support department.  The customer went ahead and recorded the guy sleep and it was plastered all over the internet.  BAD news for that company.  By the way, that company is one of the biggest cable companies in US.

So, having a great service and/or product is a must, that goes without saying.  Next question is: How do you get exposure for your product or service so you can get the attention you deserve.  Sometimes, you need to do some good old fashion marketing. 🙂  Sometimes, it may just fall right into your lap.

And today, I think that opportunity has fallen right into your lap.  What do I mean by that?  Well, if you live in United States, you have probably heard of a magazine called FAST Company.  You can check them out at  About a month ago, they started a campaign called “The Influence Project.”  Basically, the influence project was created to find the 2010 most influential person online.  Here’s the crazy part about this project.

If you sign up with the Influence project, they are going to print your picture in their November issue of the “Fast Company” magazine.  Now, let’s think about this.  You are trying to get more clients.  Do you think that being published in “Fast Company” magazine would give you a really BIG credibility boost?  HECK YA!  For me, it’s a no brainer.  In fact, I did it myself and it was easier than ever.  So, unless you don’t want more credibility for yourself and your business, I suggest you get listed within the Influence Project.

Here’s how it works:

Step #1 :  Click on the image below to go to the Influence project page.

Step 2:  Once you are on the page, get started by signing up with the Influence project.  It’s really easy.  All you have to do is provide them with few details like your name and email address, picture and you are all set.  They’ll give you your very own url that you can use to share with the entire world.    Why would you want to do that?  Because when you do, you’ll influence rank with get bigger and you’ll be able to influence more people.  I don’t know about you but I love helping people.  If I can help someone get more business, help their life get better and/or make more money, it’s all worth it.  That’s why I do what  I do every day.

Step 3:  Here’s a tip for you:  Send your link to your friends on Facebook and twitter.  Just post a short message telling them about the project.  if you don’t know what to say, here’s a short message you can use:

Cool.  I hope you went ahead and did this.  Here’s what else I am going to do.  Later this week, on Friday to be exact, I will post another blog post about this project and how it used word of mouth marketing in its success.  In that post, I will dissect the Influence Project showing you how you can use this to benefit your and your business, how to make it successful and how you can do a similar project for your business to get tons of exposure.  In short, you won’t want to miss that post.

    I dont truly know what you talking about here. This cant be the only way to think about this can it? It seems like you know a great deal, so why not explore it a lot more? Make it more accessible to everyone else who might not agree with you? Youd get a lot a lot more people behind this should you just stopped making general statements.

    Thanks for the comment Belajar. As far as word of mouth, there are many different ways to do it and use it. I’m not really sure what you mean by your comment though. If you could elaborate more on your comment, I would love to help you out and get you a better response.

    As far as the post being written in ‘general statements,’ I couldn’t get into too much detail because the length of the post would be much longer. it sounds like you know a thing or two about this so you know what I am talking about.

    However, as I said in the post, I am writing a followup post where I’ll give more details as to how Fast Company used this technique in their “Influence Project.”

    Anyway, great stuff, Peter. Too many agents focus their efforts entirely on SEO. Some of the most successful agents in my market have a minimal online presence, that’s because they have proven, old-school methods of doing business that clearly work. Word of mouth is huge, specially with the older generation, empty nesters, who don’t do much research online yet have the finances to buy luxury properties/second homes.

    Definitely agree with what you stated. Your explanation was certainly the simplest to understand. I tell you, I generally get irked when folks discuss issues which they plainly don’t know about.     Thanks for your comment Alex. Great point as many established business owners and Realtors do use word of mouth marketing effectively. In fact, my father in law who has his own business relies entirely on word of mouth and can barely keep up. Then again, he wants to keep his operation smaller than expand so it works well for him.

    I want to bring up a point though. Do you know that using word of mouth marketing on the internet will expand the power of the strategy about 100 times or so. Just look at Fast Co. magazine. In a span of a month, they were able to generate over 32,000 new leads and over 1.2 millions views of their website. How cool is that?

    Also, as far as real estate goes, do you know that according to the 2009 NAR survey, over 90% of people used the internet to do research before they every went out to look at a house. Here’s something even bigger…

    36% of those people ended up buying the house. Now, where is our market at? I think we all know where real estate professionals have to be in today’s world.
