This one skill is a skill that I am constantly learning and working on. It is not something you are born with. It’s something you learn by practice and experience. This one skill is none other than copywriting!
Wikipedia defines copywriting as “the process of writing the words that promote a person, business, opinion, or idea. It may be used as plain text, as a radio or television advertisement, or in a variety of other media (including the internet). The main purpose of writing this marketing copy, or promotional text, is to persuade the listener or reader to act — to buy a product or subscribe to a certain viewpoint. Copywriting can include body copy, slogans, headlines, direct mail pieces, taglines, World Wide Web and Internet content…” and so on.
Why do you need to know it?
Now you are probably saying to yourself: “Okay Peter. I know what copywriting is but why do I need it to master it? Can’t I just get someone else to do it for me?”
Well, you need to know this skill because here, on the internet, it is an absolute must-know. Grant it, you can outsource it and have someone else write the reports, sales copies, squeeze pages, marketing pieces and advertisements. But the truth is that by the time you would get that done, it will cost you thousands of dollars to get all of that copy written by someone else. (Don’t give me wrong, I believe in outsourcing copywriting. Your most important sales copy should be written by an expert. But for everything else, you need to know how to write it yourself).
Let me ask you a question: Have you ever been on a site that has such a long sales copy that your right side scrolling bar is almost gone? Right at the top of the page you see a big red headline, then a sub-headline, an opening paragraph, testimonials, bulleted benefits, product photos, audios, videos, prices and P.S?
By the time you read the sales letter, sometimes not even the entire sales letter, you are 100% convinced that you need that product and you go ahead and buy it. Why? Because the copy was written by a great copywriter. But at the same time, that sales copy cost that business owner anywhere from few thousand dollars to $10,000 and even $50,000. I kid you not, I’ve heard of certain sales copy campaigns costing up to $50,000.
You need to have that influential, persuasive copy on your site when you are trying to convince motivated sellers to sell you their house. You need to have that influential copy in your ‘for sale ads’, marketing, marketing pieces and newspaper ads.
How do you learn it?
You learn this skill by practicing and learning how to be a great copywriter.
