3 Ways to Grab Your Real Estate Prospect’s Attention And Get Your Direct Marketing Mail Piece Out Of The Garbage!

Written on August 8, 2008 by Peter- REBB Founder

851854_mailbox_1.jpgToday, real estate direct marketing mail pieces get tossed in the garbage more than ever.  People are getting immune to the snail mail that comes into their mailbox and stand by the trash can when opening the mail pieces.  There is way too much garbage sent to us every single day.  We have developed this habit of throwing everything out that doesn’t catch our attention right away.  So, what can you do to get your direct mail piece out of the trash can?

Today, I am going to share with you 3 little tricks that will help your mail pieces get read by the motivated seller.

Direct Mail Creative Trick #1

Send your direct mail pieces in bright envelopes.  They grab attention.  Some of the colors you can try include silver, gold, yellow, orange, pink and the good old white.  Better yet, you can try sending your direct mail inside a partially see-through envelope.  Go up to your local printing shop and see if they can do it for you.  You can also search the internet for companies that will do that for you.

Direct Mail Creative Trick #2

Write out people’s addresses and names with an large lettering.  For some reason, seeing their name printed in large letters makes people want to see what’s inside.  It’s a subconscious thing :)  The larger, the better.  Just don’t go overboard and scream at them with your writing on the envelope.  Also, you can write out a call to action, benefit they’ll receive once they open the envelope or a simple arrow pointing to a flap on the envelope with a word “Tear Here” or “Open Here.”

Direct Mail Creative Trick #3

You can use a white #10 business size envelope with a first class stamp.  And don’t write a return address on the outside of the envelope.  This trick creates curiosity and they feel like they need to open the envelope to see who send it to them.

So there you go.  3 ways you can use right away in your direct mail to improve your open rates.  As always, test it out on a small mailing before you send out thousands of pieces.  Oh, I just thought of one more trick for you…

Whenever you send out a direct mail piece, you need to be able to track it.  You need to be able to tell if your mail piece got open, read and responded to.  But how in the world can you do that?  Easy…

Just include a word or some kind of a code within your mail piece and ask the responded to tell you the code whenever they call you or respond to your through mail.  Now, you’ll know which mail piece gets open and you won’t waste ton on money on something that doesn’t work.

Here’s a question for you.

Have you used something in the past that has worked well for you?  What do you think about those tricks?

Test them out and let me know what your results were.  I’m always open to your feedback and will help in any way I can.

Until next time,

Peter K.

Good to hear that Linda. Like i said in the post, don’t send out thousands of mailings. As with everything else when it comes to marketing, make sure you test.

And don’t forget to track the mailing.

Thank you, Peter. I enjoy reading your blog. I use postcards a lot since they don’t have to be opened and are cheaper to send than letters.

Postcards are great to use as well. And as you probably know, there are some great tricks to that as well. Have you tried sending out postcards in different color, like yellow or pink?

Thanks Peter. Another cool trick I have done is to fold your letter in a Z pattern with the ink on the outside so it shows through the envelope. Additionally the Z patter if folded properly opens easily to be read immediately.

    Thanks,
    Brian

Good tip Brian. Yes, you want to make sure that when someone opens the letter, it open NATURALLY for them. Z pattern is easy to open and can give your letter some mystery which can make your prospect open it just to see what’s inside.

    Cool. Thanks Brian.
