Yet Another Reason Why Facebook is taking Over the Web

Written on by Founder

Here’s something interesting…

A little birdie told me ,actually it was, that Facebook is coming out with another MEGA feature.  I think they are challenging Google and Twitter here which is fun to watch.  However, for us entrepreneurs, this type of a feature has a different meaning.  Why?  Because it will allow us to market to our audience on a local level and compete with businesses we never thought we could compete with in today’s economy.

So what is that feature I’m talking about?

Well, as of right now, it sort of seems as a rumor because Facebook won’t confirm it but here’s the deal.  it seems that by the end of May or beginning June, Facebook will releases a location based feature into their status updates.  What does that mean?

That means that whenever you create a status update, you will be able to share your location with the world.  For instance, if you just had a tasty frap at a local Starbucks and want to see if anyone wants to get together with you, you will be able to post and update with your location and your friends will be able to get together with you.  Now, let me ask you a question…

Is that cool or scary?

What do you think?

I want to hear your thoughts on that in the comments below.  As far as real estate goes, I think that this feature will allow real estate professionals to do some crazy, localized and targeted marketing using one of the most popular websites on the internet.  Did you know that Facebook is signing up about 1 million people per day!  Yeah,  I said per day, not month, not a year, per day.

Doesn’t that just blow your mind?

So, let me know what you think?  Personally, I can’t wait until they release this feature.

Marketing real estate to locals is huge if it can be done at an affordable cost.

Well David. When Facebook releases that feature, it will be FREE! It’s part of your status updates. The only problem you would have here is to come up with a creative marketing to use that feature to your advantage.

I am already brainstorming on some great ideas to allow Real Estate agents and investors to use this to their advantage. Let me know if you have any questions.

Peter, you certainly have your ear to the street. This feature has great possibilities . . . even for technically-savvy parents to verify that their children are where they have said that they would be!

Great possibilities here. For Facebook this could be brilliant.

Well Peter, It’s not a bad thing if your just an average Joe and want to network, but if your a celebrity of any kind, it can be a bad thing. That is, if they use the feature. For me, I like it!

    Good point Manfred.

I think that when they release the feature, they will probably allow individuals to turn that off that feature. Obviously, there are some great possibilities there. I can’t wait to see what happens.

Still trying to wrap my head around this and how this feature can be best implemented by real estate professionals to further their marketing. I’m not a fan of FB (at least not yet), but love to implement new marketing strategies, this one will have me scratching my head for a bit (or until somebody posts some great ideas… Peter?).

    HI Alex,

I think that once you see i for yourself, when they release the feature, you’ll see the potential of it much better. Plus, I’ll probably release something here to help you and thousands of other readers as well.

Sounds like facebook is trying to adopt some of the proven features of Twitter and FourSquare. Interesting

There is already a way to share your location by using Google Latitude, and I believe it’s already being used for localized marketing. Is it cool or scary? Well, it depends on you personal attitude. If you find it scary, you simply won’t use this feature, therefore there will be nothing to be afraid of. If you find it cool, you probably won’t be scared by the fact that anybody is able to get your whereabouts. As for the localized marketing – it’s a huge advantage, definitely.

Thanks for the comment Jay. Google Latitude is very powerful and can be used in many ways. I agree with you on that. However, I think that Facebook integrating the localized feature into their updates will be huge.

We’ll have to see what happens though.

Stop by again. I would love to hear your feedback and you provided us with a great comment.

As long as you can opt-out, I think this feature will be very popular! I just wonder, how exactly will it help real estate investors?

Also, Peter, I enjoy your blog, but is there anyway I can get rid of that red bar that goes up the screen?

  12. Peter- REBB Founder |

    Hi Mimi,

I think you’ll be able to opt out. Otherwise, many people would be cautious about using this Facebook’s feature.

To give you an idea, let’s say that someone makes an update saying that they just saw a house and they hated something, the agent was trying to push something on them, or they loved the house, whatever it might be…

Now, based on their location, you will be able to reply to them and let them know that you are just around the corner. They can stop by and see what you have to provide. How cool is that?

As far as the red bar at the bottom, if you look at the top right corner of that bar, there is a “X” there that allows you to close the bar. This is just one of the several tests I am doing on the website.

    Thanks for reading.

Facebook is indeed giving Google sleepless nights. This is good for the users, google needed somebody breathing down their neck.

In response to this, Big G was supposed to come out with “Google Me”, an y updates on that?

  14. Peter- REBB Founder |

Not that I know of Amar. However, I know that Google is bringing in the mobile world into their search engine. I think that soon, you’ll see mobile apps appearing in the search engine results, specifically for their own phone. 🙂
